ISEA Schedules Webinar on ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 Revisions for Sept. 30
Arlington, VA — The International Safety Equipment Association has scheduled a webinar on recent changes to the ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 head protection standard. The free webinar is set for 1 p.m. Eastern on Sept. 30, with registration required.
Webinar Details
The session covers the updated standard released Sept. 11. According to Safety+Health Magazine, the standard does not replace existing requirements or make current compliant head protection obsolete, as stated in an ISEA press release. The standard is referenced in OSHA regulations 1910.135 and 1926.100.
New Type Designations
The revisions introduce Type I+ and Type II+ designations. Type I+ includes chin strap, enhanced retention, and multidirectional impact protection. Type II+ includes chin strap and enhanced retention with Type II impact protection. The + marking indicates enhanced performance tested beyond the base standard for retention, chin strap performance, and expanded impact protection for Type I+.
Enhanced tests cover chin strap retention to keep head protection secured during impact or falls, helmet retention to maintain position during slips or trips, and multipoint impact protection for front, rear, and side coverage on Type I+.
Additional Guidance and Markings
The standard adds guidance for wearing head protection in reverse, with checks to ensure secure fit for + marked products. Environmental and visibility markings maintain HT for high temperature and LT for low temperature. The update changes high visibility (HV) to enhanced visibility (EV) to reflect that head protection falls outside the ANSI/ISEA 107 standard.
According to Safety+Health Magazine, ISEA President and CEO Cam Mackey stated that ANSI/ISEA Z89.1-2026 helps safety professionals make more informed decisions by adding clarity and consistency to features they are already evaluating. The webinar will outline these revisions in full.
