HSE Releases Video on Early Manager Action to Address Workplace Stress

Bootle, England — The Health and Safety Executive released the video Taking Action Early to Prevent Work-Related Stress to advise managers and supervisors on preventing burnout and other mental health-related issues through early intervention.

Normal Pressure and Early Intervention

The United Kingdom government working group states that feeling pressure at work is normal due to busy schedules, tight deadlines and high expectations. According to Safety+Health Magazine, the video notes that taking action early can stop stress from becoming a problem.

Specific Manager Actions

HSE recommends that managers recognize signs such as changes in behavior or engagement and reach out to workers early. A simple conversation can make a real difference by asking how people are feeling, listening and offering support.

Managers should respond by asking for worker feedback, listening to what is said and making changes that include adjusting workloads and offering a more flexible schedule. The video advises taking time to reflect on which processes and procedures are working and which can be adjusted.

Regular check-ins are recommended to help create a supportive environment where people feel able to talk.

Working Minds Campaign

The video forms part of HSE’s Working Minds campaign, which is intended to provide the tools and support employers need to address stress in the workplace. According to Safety+Health Magazine, the campaign focuses on employer resources for managing work-related stress.
