Expert Tips Issued for Safe Leaf Raking

Homeowners facing yards covered in leaves can follow specific steps drawn from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Chiropractic Association and other experts to lower injury chances while raking, according to Safety+Health Magazine.

Warm Up and Gear Up

Raking requires physical effort, so gentle stretches prepare the body beforehand. Sturdy shoes or boots, garden gloves to avoid blisters, safety glasses, long pants, long sleeves and a hat provide protection from insects, scratches and ultraviolet rays.

Inspect and Position Properly

A walk through the yard to remove branches, toys and other tripping hazards precedes raking. Workers should note low-lying branches, stumps and rocks. The American Chiropractic Association recommends a scissors stance with one foot forward, alternating feet and hand positions while staying close to the rake handle.

Protect the Back and Maintain Pace

Twisting motions from tossing leaves over the shoulder or to the side strain the back, so leaves should not be moved that way. Bending at the knees rather than the waist is advised when lifting piles. Frequent breaks and water intake help manage exertion even in cool weather, according to Safety+Health Magazine.

The guidance appears in an article titled Get ready to rake! published on the Safety+Health Magazine site.
