NSC Estimates 393 Possible Memorial Day Weekend Crash Deaths
New estimates from the National Safety Council indicate 393 people may die in motor vehicle-related crashes over the upcoming Memorial Day weekend. The council urges drivers to put safety first. According to Safety+Health Magazine, the projection covers the full holiday period.
Impairment Data from Prior Periods
Over the same holiday period two years ago, 38% of fatal crashes involved an alcohol-impaired driver. That percentage was 30 for all of 2024. The National Safety Council notes that alcohol is not the only cause of impairment. Substances such as cannabis and some prescription medications may negatively affect drivers.
Leading Causes of Roadway Deaths
Data shows dangerous behaviors such as speeding and driving distracted are the leading causes of roadway deaths. Before leaving, drivers can program a GPS and set up music or podcasts. When traveling, drivers should observe posted speed limits and remain alert.
Vehicle and Restraint Actions
An estimated 57 million vehicles have open safety recalls. Drivers can check their vehicles at CheckToProtect.org. An additional 96 lives could be saved over Memorial Day weekend if everyone in the vehicle wears a seat belt, according to NSC.
NSC Guidance on Travel Preparation
Drivers should designate a sober driver or arrange alternative transportation to avoid driving under the influence. They should also check tires, oil level, and other vehicle functions before travel. According to Safety+Health Magazine, NSC CEO Lorraine M. Martin stated that with millions expected to travel, protecting one another on the road remains imperative. Drivers are advised to look in the back seat before locking a vehicle to ensure no passengers are left inside.
