Experts Highlight Driveway Safety Risks for Children
According to Safety+Health Magazine, driveways become busy areas for kids in warm weather, involving activities such as shooting hoops, riding bikes, and drawing with chalk, where injuries can occur. The article, published on May 15, 2026, by Kevin Druley, features advice from experts to maintain safety during these activities.
Vehicle Safety Precautions
Experts note that thousands of children are killed or seriously injured annually when drivers backing up fail to see them, with many incidents happening in home driveways involving a parent or close relative. Kids and Cars recommends walking around a parked vehicle to check for children before backing out, while Safe Kids Worldwide suggests marking a safe spot for kids to wait, such as drawing a “stand here” box with chalk, and holding hands with small children when entering or exiting vehicles. Additionally, using a magnetic decal on the vehicle as a spot for children to keep their hand until it’s safe adds another layer of precaution.
Bike and Outdoor Activity Safety
For bike riding, experts state that driveways are not risk-free due to uneven surfaces that can cause falls, particularly on sloped areas, and the danger of riding into the street. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates that children younger than 10 may not make quick decisions needed for street riding, and the Cleveland Clinic warns that drivers might miss cyclists. To mitigate these risks, parents can set up a sports net at the driveway’s end or place safety cones to alert drivers of nearby children, and ensure kids wear properly fitting helmets when on wheels.
General Safety Measures for Driveway Play
Being barefoot outdoors poses risks, as Thomas Landretti, a podiatrist with Aspirus Health, explains that walking on hot surfaces like blacktop or cement can burn feet and increase the chance of stepping on rocks or sharp objects that could cause infections. Appropriate footwear, such as sneakers with a firm but flexible bottom covering the whole foot, is recommended for kids. Furthermore, for areas with basketball hoops, installing special netting around the driveway can keep balls contained, and picking up items like sticks, stones, bikes, skateboards, roller skates, hoses, and lawn equipment helps prevent injuries during games, as small changes can significantly enhance safety according to the article.
