CVSA Reports 19% Vehicle Out-of-Service Rate in 39th Roadcheck

Greenbelt, MD — The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance released results from its 39th annual International Roadcheck after CVSA-certified inspectors conducted nearly 55,000 inspections on commercial trucks and buses across North America during the three-day event in May. Inspectors examined brake systems, lights, tires and other equipment.

Out-of-Service Findings

CVSA data show 19% of vehicles and 5.8% of drivers were placed out of service. Brake systems accounted for 24.3% of vehicle out-of-service violations and tires for 20.9%. Among driver violations, absence of a medical card represented 27% and hours-of-service violations 23.4%.

Emphasis Areas

Inspectors placed special emphasis on electronic logging device tampering, falsification or manipulation, as well as cargo securement. ELD tampering ranked as the seventh-leading driver out-of-service violation at 3.7%. Cargo securement ranked fourth among vehicle out-of-service violations at 12.4%.

Participating Agencies

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration participates in the International Roadcheck program, along with the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators, Transport Canada, and Mexico’s Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation, according to Safety+Health Magazine. Results are available from the 39th annual event according to Safety+Health Magazine.
