NSC Projects 410 Deaths in Fourth of July Weekend Crashes
The National Safety Council estimates that 410 people may die in motor vehicle crashes from 6 p.m. on July 2 to 11:59 p.m. on July 5. The projection covers the period when millions of people plan holiday travel.
NSC Statement and Goal
NSC CEO Lorraine M. Martin stated that every driver has the power to help prevent a tragedy by making simple, safe choices behind the wheel. The organization noted an opportunity to make this Independence Day one of the safest yet.
Recommended Driver Actions
NSC lists the following actions: do not drive distracted by putting phones away and programming infotainment systems before departure; get seven to nine hours of sleep; designate a sober driver or make alternate arrangements; follow posted speed limits; and buckle up, which could save 100 lives this holiday weekend.
Vehicle and Passenger Checks
Drivers should look in the back seat before exiting to prevent children, pets, and passengers from being left in hot vehicles. NSC also advises checking vehicles for open safety recalls at ChecktoProtect.org.
These estimates and recommendations appear in Safety+Health Magazine coverage of the NSC announcement.
