Washington — The Chemical Safety Board is urging chemical facilities to prepare for hurricane season by securing hazardous materials and training workers on emergency procedures.

CSB states that adequate preparations can help workers, emergency responders and surrounding communities stay safe in the event of a storm. Additional steps include ensuring backup power for critical safety systems and coordinating with local emergency management authorities. Hurricane season along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts lasts through Nov. 30.

CSB Officials on Extreme Weather Risks

“Preparation is key to minimizing the effects of extreme weather on chemical facilities,” CSB member Sylvia Johnson said in a press release. “Facilities must not let their guard down against these hazards, or the consequences may be dire.”

CSB Chair Steve Owens noted that it only takes one bad storm hitting one unprepared facility to lead to a catastrophic chemical incident, according to Safety+Health Magazine.

Seasonal Outlook and Timing

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is predicting lower-than-average hurricane activity in the Atlantic. CSB renewed its preparedness call on June 12, 2026, according to Safety+Health Magazine (https://www.safetyandhealthmagazine.com/it-only-takes-one-bad-storm-csb-renews-call-for-hurricane-preparedness/).
