Nevada OSHA Issues Heat Illness Prevention Guidance Document
Las Vegas — Nevada OSHA has published a guidance document that provides answers to frequently asked questions about the agency’s standard on heat illness prevention. The standard took effect April 29.
Standard Requirements
The standard requires employers with at least 10 employees to conduct a Job Hazard Analysis to identify conditions that could lead to a heat-related illness. It applies when the majority of an employer’s workforce is exposed to excessive heat for at least 30 minutes in any 60-minute work period, according to Safety+Health Magazine.
FAQ Topics Addressed
The guidance addresses specific questions including whether businesses not required to establish a written safety program must still protect workers from occupational exposure to heat illness. It also covers whether the regulation applies to all industries, what requirements are included in the heat illness regulation, how often a JHA must be performed, and who should perform the JHA.
Additional Resources Listed
The guidance document lists links to additional resources. These include Nevada OSHA’s Heat Complaints Dashboard and the OSHA-NIOSH Heat Safety Tool app. Nevada OSHA operates under federal OSHA’s State Plan program, according to Safety+Health Magazine.
